The timers that decide the round

Bomb Defuse is about completing or preventing the objective. The official help gives the following timings; these are game rules from the checked client, not estimates from recorded play.

How to plant the bomb

One player on the attacking side starts the round with the bomb. Carry it to bombsite A or B. Stand still within the site and hold E for 3.2 seconds. Alternatively, the official instructions say to select the bomb with 5 and hold Mouse 1.

If the carrier dies, the bomb drops onto the floor. Walk over it to pick it up. To pass it intentionally, hold the bomb and press G. A teammate can then recover it. If E does not begin a plant, check that you have the bomb and are inside the site before changing controls.

How to defuse

Approach the planted bomb, look at it from close range and hold E. A full defuse takes 10 seconds without a kit and 5 seconds with one. The kit costs $400 in the buy menu; the official help also says a dropped kit can be picked up.

A useful practical habit is to account for the time needed to reach the bomb, position yourself and complete the full interaction. The defuse duration is only part of that sequence. Do not treat the final five or ten seconds as a safe arrival target.

What changes after the plant

Before planting, defenders can win by eliminating all attackers or letting the round clock run out. After the bomb is planted, eliminating the attackers alone does not satisfy the listed defensive win condition: the bomb still needs to be defused.

Attackers can win by eliminating the defenders or letting the planted bomb explode. Our tactical suggestion is to defend the objective after planting instead of chasing distant fights. A position that lets you respond to the bomb is usually more relevant than an extra elimination elsewhere. The right position depends on the actual map and remaining players; this guide does not invent named callouts.
